Kerrie Webb, Art Therapist
What happens in Art Therapy?
I support children to make art to express, explore and process thoughts, feelings and experiences. Through the child’s art making I develop a sense of the child’s inner world of emotions. At the child’s pace I support their exploration of this inner world. Over time in art therapy, children can begin to manage feelings better as they process fears, worries and upsets, untangle unhelpful ideas about themselves and develop a stronger sense of who they are. Along the way I work with parents to strengthen their understanding of the child’s emotional needs and how to best support them.
Why do children attend Art Therapy?
Children come to art therapy for many reasons. I have supported many children when parents noticed an unexplained change or intensifying of behaviours in their child and are seeking to understand what is happening for the child emotionally. This may include changes such as: becoming upset very easily and often, challenging behaviours at home, fear of separating from parents, night-time fears or regression in behaviour and development. Other children have experienced challenging events in their life and need an opportunity to process and make sense of these experiences e.g. changes in family life and parent relationships, grief, loss and separation, traumatic events experienced by the child or family and domestic and family violence.
Children do not need to be talented at art to engage in Art Therapy. Art therapy is not skill based and a range of materials are offered to meet the needs of each child.
